AI Dispute & Chargeback Response

AI Dispute & Chargeback Response

When a customer disputes a payment, AI Dispute Response automatically assembles a chargeback defense from your payment plan data — the signed contract, installment payment history, customer identity, and checkout details — and submits it to Stripe on your behalf. It's designed so you never miss a dispute evidence deadline, and you only pay when it wins.

How it works

  1. A dispute arrives. Stripe notifies Partial.ly when a customer disputes one of your payments (a chargeback).
  2. Evidence is assembled. Partial.ly gathers the relevant proof already in your account and generates a written argument tailored to the dispute's reason code.
  3. You're notified and can review. You receive an email with the assembled evidence package. You can review it, edit the written argument, submit it immediately, or decline and handle the dispute yourself.
  4. Evidence is submitted to Stripe — either after you approve it, or automatically before the deadline (depending on your response mode).
  5. The outcome is recorded. When Stripe decides the dispute, Partial.ly updates the record and emails you the result. If you win, the success fee is charged; if you lose, you pay nothing.

Evidence Partial.ly uses

Because your payment plans live natively in Partial.ly, it can assemble strong, installment-specific evidence automatically, including:

  • The signed payment plan contract
  • Installment payment history — prior successful payments with dates and amounts, which help demonstrate the customer's ongoing acknowledgement of the agreement
  • Customer identity — name, email, phone, and address captured at checkout
  • Checkout context — the IP address and device recorded when the plan was created
  • Product / service description and the agreed offer terms

Enabling the feature

Go to Settings → AI Dispute & Chargeback Response to set it up.

  1. Add a billing card. A card on file is required to enroll. It's used only to charge the success fee when a dispute is won — there's no monthly cost. Saving the card places a small refundable pre-authorization hold (minimum $100) to validate it; the hold is refreshed monthly and is not a charge.
  2. Choose a response mode:
    • Auto-submit after 24-hour review window — when a dispute arrives, you're emailed the evidence package and have 24 hours to review, edit, or decline it before Partial.ly submits it automatically. Evidence is always submitted before the Stripe response deadline, even if that comes sooner than 24 hours.
    • Wait for my approval before submitting — nothing is submitted until you review and approve it.
  3. Enable AI Dispute Response and save. Enabling accepts the success fee terms.

Reviewing and submitting a dispute

Your disputes are listed on the Disputes / Chargebacks page, which shows an AI Response status for each one. Open a dispute to see its assembled evidence. From the dispute detail you can:

  • Edit the evidence narrative — the written argument sent to the card network reviewer alongside the attached documents.
  • Submit to Stripe — send the evidence immediately.
  • Decline & handle manually — opt this dispute out and respond yourself (for example, through your Stripe dashboard).

If you take no action in auto mode, the evidence is submitted automatically after the 24-hour review window, or sooner if the deadline requires it.

AI Response statuses

  • Awaiting review — evidence is assembled and ready for you to review or approve.
  • AI submitted / Submitted to Stripe — evidence has been sent; the dispute is under review by the card network.
  • Won — decided in your favor; the recovered amount is shown, and the success fee is charged.
  • Lost — decided against you; you pay nothing.
  • Declined — you opted this dispute out to handle it manually.
  • Expired — the response deadline passed without a submission.

Pricing

  • No monthly cost and no per-dispute charge.
  • 20% success fee. If a dispute is decided in your favor, Partial.ly charges 20% of the recovered amount to your card on file, immediately after the win, and emails you a receipt.
  • If the dispute is lost, you pay nothing.
  • Success fees are charged in USD.

A refundable pre-authorization hold (minimum $100, refreshed monthly) is placed on your card to validate it and cover expected fee volume. It is a hold, not a charge.

Limitations

  • Stripe direct charges only. AI Dispute Response works for disputes on Stripe direct charges. Disputes on legacy destination charges are handled by Partial.ly support — email evidence to support@partial.ly (4.5MB limit).
  • A billing card is required. You can't enable the feature without a card on file for success fee billing.
  • Billing must stay current. If a success fee charge or the monthly pre-authorization refresh fails, the feature is paused and new disputes are skipped until you update your card. You'll be emailed if this happens.
  • Review the argument when you can. The evidence narrative is AI-generated. It's built from your real account data, but you should review and edit it before submission when possible — especially for high-value disputes or unusual cases.
  • Deadlines still apply. Card networks give a limited window to respond. AI Dispute Response is built to submit before the deadline, but declining or disabling the feature leaves the response up to you.
  • Winning is never guaranteed. Strong evidence improves your odds but does not guarantee an outcome; the card-issuing bank makes the final decision.

Missing contracts

The signed payment plan contract is one of the strongest pieces of evidence. If your account doesn't have contracts enabled, disputes can still be defended with the other evidence Partial.ly holds, but the defense is weaker — enabling contracts on your plans strengthens future dispute responses.
